Untamed landscapes and hidden wonders

Lake Natron

Remote, otherworldly, and utterly captivating — Lake Natron is one of Tanzania’s most unique and dramatic landscapes. Set at the base of the active Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano near the Kenyan border, this striking salt lake glows red in the sun and shimmers with reflections of endless sky.

Lake Natron is best known as the primary breeding ground for East Africa’s lesser flamingos, which gather here in the thousands. But it’s not just the birdlife that makes this place special — it’s the raw, surreal beauty of the surroundings. The air feels still, the colors are bold, and the sense of isolation is both humbling and unforgettable.

Visitors can take a guided walk along the lake’s crusty shoreline or hike through a hidden gorge to reach cascading waterfalls — a refreshing surprise in such an arid environment. Both experiences offer the chance to connect with nature in a slower, more immersive way.

Lake Natron is not for everyone — it’s wild, remote, and rugged. But for those who venture here, it offers a glimpse into a truly untouched corner of Tanzania that feels like nowhere else on Earth.
